Soprano — The Call to Sing

Auditions: What to Expect

A short, friendly conversation about your voice, plus a brief excerpt from this semester's music — not a performance to fear.

Before You Come In

What to prepare

This isn't a competitive audition — it's how Music Director Dan Perkins gets to know your voice and finds the right section for you. New singers audition individually; returning members go through the same excerpt as part of their annual vocal screening instead. Either way, you'll sing a short excerpt from this semester's music, so we can hear how your voice sits with what we're actually performing this season.

The Process

What actually happens

Step 1

Sign up for a time

Auditions are scheduled individually, one singer at a time — no waiting room full of strangers.

Step 2

A short vocal warm-up

Dan will walk you through a few simple exercises to hear your range and tone. No prior warm-up needed.

Step 3

Sing an excerpt from this semester's music

You'll sing a short excerpt from the season's repertoire. This helps Dan hear how your voice fits the music we're actually performing — it's not pass/fail.

Step 4

A conversation about voice part

Together you'll land on whether Soprano, Alto, Tenor, or Bass feels like the best fit for your voice.

Good to Know

A few common questions

How long does it take?

Most auditions run about 15–20 minutes, start to finish.

What should I wear?

Whatever's comfortable — this isn't a performance, just a conversation.

I'm nervous. Is that normal?

Completely. Most singers say it was easier than they expected once they were in the room.

Do returning singers need to audition too?

Not exactly — returning members complete a brief vocal screening each fall instead, singing the same short excerpt from that semester's music. See the Members page for screening dates and sign-up.
